As one of the most spectacular, film-friendly estates in the Scottish Borders, Glen House has always attracted the creative spirit. Today, the estate welcomes film, commercial and fashion shoots; be it the internationally acclaimed film crew of Hallam Foe, a music video featuring British singer/song writer Birdy, or fashion campaigns for Barbour, New Look, Crew Clothing and Anthropologie.
This highland double offers 5000 acres of sweeping, rugged moorland, woods, ruins, winding rivers and dingly dells as well as formal, manicured gardens. In the midst of this stands Glen House – a castellated Victorian fantasy, still lived in by the Tennant family.
The advantage of choosing Glen as your location is having this massive ‘studio‘ to bring themes to life, and at the same time enjoying total privacy. You can make the main house your own for the duration of the shoot so there’s plenty of undistracted space and possibilities.
Wordsworth talks about Glenbanks at the far end of Glen, and Oscar Wilde was one of the many writers to visit the family. You only have to look at the photos to understand why photographers and artists love it so much.
The house is both stately with its upstairs downstairs set up and it’s also informal and authentic in its design and finish with original artworks and fabrics. The architecture is imposing; traditionally Scottish Baronial, but romantic and entirely charming. Outdoors, and the colours are lush green in spring and summer, the blossom encroaching on the house. In autumn, these turn to rich reds and golds, the estate coming to life in a sea of purple heather and burnished wood. Come winter and you’ll find a jungle of frosted evergreen trees, with their leaves intact.
The remarkable combination of aesthetics on offer at Glen House is what lends itself so well as a location for shoots, including Stills, Commercials, Music Videos, Documentaries, Film and TV Dramas. Available areas for filming include the main house, boathouse, cottages, farm and stables on the estate, as well as its picturesque loch and woodland. At a mere 1-hour drive south east of Edinburgh – or 1hr 45 from Glasgow – Glen House has that rare blend of seclusion, combined with a close proximity to major cities and ports of travel.
